To Break Bread is to engage in a comfortable, friendly interaction. Originally, the term was literal, meaning that a loaf of bread would be broken to share and eat, a casual meal among associates. Today, the term is used to describe a social interaction where something is shared. This could be food, money, commodities, assets, or other various items.

Today I did my body composition analysis; I have not done one for many years. I am amazing at how much my body composition - fat, muscle, bone and water ratios have changed and yet "I still feel the same!"

Unless you diligently monitoring your physiology consciously and objectively you have no real understanding to the question - "how you doing!"
So today starts my journey of monitoring and improving my body composition.

What are you monitoring and wishing to change physiologically

In Chiropractic Philosophy, we talk of Innate Intelligence - the natural God-Given intelligence of the body that knows automatically how each and every part of the body works. Most importantly it was your innate intelligence they grew and can heal every part of you...without you knowing about it.

Then we have educated intelligence - that mechanism which is based on your experiences and habits. Some are good for you and help your body, however others (most) are not effective and instead create dysfunction, compensation, pain and symptoms, eventually damage.

Chiropractic is designed to clear the interference and allow you to regain a communication and relationship with your innate intelligence. This allows your body to adapt, heal and grow from every challenge.

Sounds great right!?!

So to illustrate I ask - if you knew that you were hurting yourself would you still hurt yourself? For most the answer would be no, ofcourse not. So why are the Chronic Pain suffers in pain?

Look forward to your thoughts

Stress is the modern day killer. Stress comes in many shapes, sizes and disguises but it has the same detrimental effect on the body unless you consciously override it.

These techniques have been shown (when done consistently) to train the body to adapt to stress:
1) knowing the bigger picture to your life
2) knowing what is the goal / reward at the end of the stress
3) have people who emotionally and intellectually support you and help you contemplate your solutions
4) being grateful for small blessings
5) parasympathetic breathing practice
6) gentle stretching
7) journaling and emotional processing
8) exercise
9) visualisation; meditation
10) prayer

And my wife will tell you - chocolate.

Cycle of Acceptance

Dr. Travis Mitchell

Observation of the body is critical. this allows you to take note of subtle changes in functions within the body and gives you first hand opportunity to deal with small dysfunctions in the body before compensation, chronicity and decay sets in.

The simple observation I recommend are:
1) bowl motion - smell, size, shape, amount, frequency, texture, colour
2) urination - colour, smell, texture, input vs output
3) breathing - depth, rhythm, internal state
4) body odour
5) Resting heart rate and heart rate variability
6) spinal meningeal tension
7) Mood and emotional state

If you want more details on any of these, message me directly. Happy weekend

Do you deal with pain and symptoms?
Or loss of function?

For most people we wait until the problem is so bad that one has debilitating pain and disability.

The law of preventative maintenance suggests dealing with challenges while they small and easy to resolve.

Compensation occurs very easily in the body especially when issues are left for some time.

What are you not sorting out?

A thought for the day...when you are a developing person (up to the ages of 24). Growth, development and correct physiological function occurs without the need for any conscious effort.

24 years of age is when your bone mass density is at its peak and signifies the final development and maturity of the body.

The lack of consciousness is for me the concern because we learn how to take the body for granted. As we age the need for providing consciously for the body is vital as it promotes graceful aging and ongoing independence and great quality of life.

For most it is only when the signs of deterioration has occured do we wonder what has happened and what do we need to do about it. In some cases this is too late and severe disability and lost quality of life ensures.

If you have a chance, consciously take care! Have a great week.

Thank you to those that responded to last night's message.

"Everything you do either helps or hurts you!" - Ryan Penny
By virtue of this statement every day life you face is tallied up at the end of the day. Your sleep every night is designed to help to process your day and hopefully start the next day on a clear slate.

So when you wake up in the morning you will either be in debt (you had a stressful day before in many directions and you did not sleep well) or in credit (you dealt and adapted from every challenge from the day and slept well).

most people who consult with a chiropractor do so because the "last straw broke the horses back" perhaps not understand the accumulation of debt.

Chiropractic is designed to clear debt and promote the body to heal. However it is the person's responsibility to do actions on a daily basis to keep promoting their credit. What are you doing to keep yourself in credit?

Have you heard of fascia?

“OUR MUSCLES, BONES, FASCIA, TISSUES AND ORGANS ARE IN A BEAUTIFUL DANCE TOGETHER, INFORMED BY THE WAY WE MOVE, OUR PATTERNS, AND EVEN OUR THOUGHTS, EMOTIONS AND DISAPPOINTMENTS.”

Something to think about:

‘What many people don’t realize is the physiological impact that scars can have on their bodies — whether its a minor scar earned by falling off a tricycle at age four, a high-school football injury, or a C-section scar sustained during the birth of a child. Many people’s problems could be traced back to a scar they had forgotten they even had. While not every scar presents a problem, many do. If your body doesn’t breakdown scar tissue completely, it will often spread — triggering your body to compensate. Any kink, pull or restriction in one area can affect everything else. If your movements are restricted, your muscles will be forced to work harder. If your nerves are trapped, your circulation can be restricted — and so on. The reason for this is because you’re essentially held together by one huge single sheet of connective tissue, or fascia. This fascia wraps around your entire body like an intricate spider web and influences the way you function — from your muscles and your bones, to your organs, nerves, veins and arteries.’

With the weather in Joburg like it was today many arthritic patients suffer because the atmospheric pressure is too high and creates joint compression. If you have arthritic joints that joint compression is painful but there is a resolve for it:
1) stay warm, the arthritic pain is worse when you cold and wet
2) stretch extra and move. Movement creates joint resilience and prevents the joint compression
3) get rid of acidity and inflammation through dietary mechanisms
4) visit your chiropractor to get your spine connected and free for compression.

Rules of Aging for Health

When I deal with patients under the age of 24, my job is infinitely easier for two main reasons:
1. They have less psychological blocking of healing
2. Their physiology is naturally progressing and wishing to function optimally

So if you are below the magic age be grateful and consciously use it. However, if you are on the “down-ward slide” then take note of these rules of aging:
1. As you age you have to work harder to achieve the same physiological function.
2. As you age it takes longer to get back to your best level of physiological function.
3. As you age you lose your physiological function quicker especially if you stop consciously focusing on it.

I have two categories of patients in my office:
1. Young enough and willing to make the effort
2. Too old and believe it is not possible

Which one are you?

Great posture is your muscles effectiveness over gravity. There are muscles that should be active 24/7 to hold you upright. The easiest way to check:
Stand with your back to a wall
1) your head should be able to be in contact with the wall
2) your eyeliner should be horizontal
3) your shoulders should be open and against the wall
4) your abdominal muscles engaged
5) your gluts engaged
6) your pelvis in a neutral position.
Check how easy you can achieve this position and hold it

An important principle in health and healing is how often you rest and take a break. The rule is take breaks often to counter the work you doing. So we start small -
Every hour take a minute break
Every day take an hour break
Every week take two days off
Every 6 weeks take a few days off
Every 12 weeks we try to take a week off
Every year take extra time off.

When we advocate time off, I am not financially suggesting take an expensive holiday but you need to change the focus of your brain and mind. This allows your brain and mind to be focussed strongly at the task at hand when you return and I promise you...you will be much more effective.

On a financial note, taking time out of business has always proved to be beneficial because when you go back in invigorated your business flurishes!

So take note - this week coming is the 6th week of 2019. So mini break at the end of this week
